Antibiotics for Infection Should be Accompanied by Probiotic

San Antonio, TX – The winter continues to bring cold weather, and multitudes of Americans are facing sinus infections among other ailments this month. Gastroenterologist, Dr. Lawrence Hoberman, cautions that while antibiotics are effective for treating bacterial infections, patients should simultaneously take a probiotic.

Antibiotics are beneficial but unfortunately not discretionary with regard to bacteria that they destroy. During the process of clearing away the bacteria causing the sinus infection, antibiotics often deplete the helpful bacteria in our intestines.

The majority of our intestinal bacteria are beneficial, but harmful bacteria are also present. The good bacteria produce substances that suppress the harmful. Once the good are depleted, the harmful bacteria are able to multiply and cause inflammation of the intestines. This inflammation can result in diarrhea and other GI symptoms. Fortunately these negative antibiotic side effects can often be combated by a multi-species probiotic.

Probiotics contain the healthy bacteria in our intestines and can be added as a daily supplement in a capsule form or in foods, like yogurt. These bacteria are able to adhere to the intestinal lining cells and aid in our digestion, immunity and protect us from harmful bacteria that we may ingest or harbor in our intestines.

The probiotic marketplace in the United States has grown exponentially the past few years. While still considered a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), the benefits of probiotics are beginning to be recognized by mainstream medicine.

“There is no shortage of medical studies underway to determine even more potential benefits of probiotics, studies which will likely speed that acceptance rate among mainstream physicians,” says Dr. Hoberman. “I truly encourage any patient who is taking an antibiotic to also consult their physician about adding a daily probiotic, at least while currently taking any prescriptive antibiotic.”
