The intestinal tract of an infant is sterile while in the womb. Within two hours after birth, the intestines begin to be populated by the bacteria in the baby’s environment. During the first two years of life, the intestinal flora is established and generally remains the same lifelong.
In infants, the beneficial bacteria help to stimulate the development of the intestines immune system and the growth and development of the intestinal lining cells. When the flora is disrupted by such events as intestinal infections and the use of antibiotics, unhealthy bacteria can multiply and interfere with the normal digestive functions, resulting in multiple GI symptoms.
Recent studies on children have demonstrated probiotics to be beneficial at address symptoms of:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Infantile Colic
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Eczema
As medical research continues to gain a better understanding of how the intestinal bacteria affect the function and health of our intestines. The results of these studies certainly further our knowledge about how probiotics can improve gastrointestinal disorders in children.
It’s wise to consider discussing with your child’s doctor taking a good probiotic, like EndoMune, if your child is having a problem with infectious diarrhea or chronic abdominal pain.
